Carver's Research Methodology

Understanding the scientific approach that made Carver's work revolutionary

1

Observation

Carver began every investigation with careful, patient observation of nature. He believed that nature held all the answers and that the scientist's job was to discover them.

2

Systematic Analysis

Breaking down complex organisms into their chemical components. Carver analyzed the molecular structure of peanuts, sweet potatoes, and other crops to understand their potential.

3

Creative Synthesis

Combining scientific knowledge with creative thinking to develop new products. Carver called this "creative chemistry" - finding new uses for existing materials.

4

Practical Application

Every discovery was evaluated for its practical benefit to farmers. Carver prioritized solutions that were affordable and accessible to poor Southern farmers.

5

Education & Dissemination

Research meant nothing if farmers couldn't use it. Carver created bulletins, demonstrations, and the Jesup Wagon to bring knowledge directly to the people.

6

Continuous Refinement

Carver constantly refined his methods and products based on feedback and new discoveries. His laboratory was a place of ongoing experimentation.

Carver on His Method:

"I know of nothing more inspiring than that of making discoveries for one's self... I never have to grope for methods; the method is revealed at the moment I am inspired to create something new."

- George Washington Carver, 1924
